The popular Walking Rugby program is coming back to Redditch, bigger and better than ever before!

The free, touch Rugby style sessions will return from Friday 10 November, 10.30am at Abbey Stadium and will run every week for the foreseeable future.

The return of Walking Rugby has been made possible through a collaboration between Redditch Borough Council’s Sports Development Team, the Worcester Warriors Foundation who are providing a dedicated coach to lead the sessions and Rubicon Leisure who will be providing the venue.

This partnership ensures that individuals of all ages and abilities can enjoy the sport they love in a friendly and welcoming environment for absolutely no cost.

Walking Rugby is a modified version of the beloved game, designed to be more accessible and inclusive. Participants don't engage in tackling but instead touch or tag their opponents. This gentle approach to the sport offers a fantastic opportunity for people to stay active and engaged with rugby, making it both a great workout and an excellent way to connect with others who share a passion for the game.

Leisure Portfolio Holder, Cllr Joanne Beecham, said: "Walking Rugby is a wonderful initiative that aligns perfectly with our commitment to promoting a healthy community. We're grateful for the Worcester Warriors Foundation and Rubicon Leisure for their continued support in making this program accessible to all."

Council Leader Cllr Matt Dormer added, "I’m pleased to see Walking Rugby return to our community. It is ideal for individuals of all skill levels to stay active, enjoy the sport, and make new friends. Its return is testament to this administration’s dedication to providing opportunities for all of our residents to lead active, healthy, and vibrant lives.”

The Worcester Warriors Foundation has been integral in bringing Walking Rugby back to the community. A representative from the Foundation stated: "We are proud to support and provide coaching for Walking Rugby in Redditch, ensuring that more people have access to this wonderful sport. It's not just about playing rugby; it's about building relationships and having fun together."

Managing Director of Rubicon Leisure, which runs many of the borough’s leisure and cultural facilities on behalf of the Council, Ben Clawson-Chan, said: "We're delighted to work in partnership with Worcester Warriors Foundation and Redditch Borough Council to provide a welcoming and practical space for Walking Rugby. At Rubicon Leisure, we're committed to fostering a sense of camaraderie among our users, as well as providing a variety of options for healthy living, and this initiative is a perfect embodiment of that vision."

To participate in Walking Rugby, interested participants simply need to show up a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork, and they’re ready to play.
