Walking football sessions at the Abbey Stadium have been hailed a success this week with the aim of getting more residents active in the coming weeks.

Eighteen budding Linekers and Kanes attended this week’s session and were able to get back pitch side, enjoying a contactless game of walking football.

Sessions started on 27th June and each week around sixteen to twenty participants are attending, as well as a number of spectators.

Organised by Redditch Borough Council, in partnership with Rubicon Leisure, the sessions see reduced physical contact and tackling which makes it perfect for people who have been out of the game for a while and want to make a comeback.

Walking football offers many health benefits as well as being great fun for any age, ability, fitness level or gender. With no running, jogging, or heading – and tackling with reduced physical contact – Walking Football is a fun and safe way for players to enjoy football and socialise together.

The sessions are free to attend and run every Monday from 10.30am for an hour, on the Abbey Stadium outdoor pitch.

The Council’s Portfolio-holder for Leisure, Cllr Jo Beecham, said: “Where there is a will, there is always another way to play! We are committed to getting Redditch active and creative opportunities for exercise should be available for everyone. Walking Football is no exception and is proven to have lots of physical benefits as well as helping to improve mental health and well-being – it’s also a great way to meet like-minded people.”

Leader of the Council, Cllr Matt Dormer, added: “With the warmer weather coming what a great reason to get outside and enjoy exercising, playing, and meeting new people. And what’s more, it’s completely free!”

These free sessions have been funded by Versus Arthritis through the council’s Sports Development Team. The Sports Development Team are currently working towards putting on another Walking Football session at Arrow Valley Lake.
