Vigilance urged following doorstep crime cases
The Safer Redditch Partnership is warning residents to stay alert following a recent rise in doorstep crime and rogue trader incidents across Redditch.
Criminals have been targeting elderly residents, falsely claiming that unnecessary repairs are required, particularly roofing work. These individuals use high-pressure tactics to gain entry or extract money, including pretending to be from Redditch Borough Council.
Inspector Richard Field, Redditch Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “We’re investigating reports of individuals exploiting vulnerable residents including impersonating council staff. This behaviour is deeply concerning. We urge everyone to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to the police or Trading Standards.”
Residents are reminded:
- Don’t buy from doorstep traders or open the door to unknown callers.
- Use a door chain and display ‘no doorstep callers’ signage.
- Always check ID and note any vehicle or business details.
- Report concerns to Trading Standards (0808 223 1133) or the Police (101 or 999 in emergencies).
Anyone genuinely working for Redditch Borough Council will carry ID, be happy to confirm their department or officer contact, and wait if you need to verify their identity by calling the council on 01527 64252.
Cllr Ian Cresswell, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities, said: “If you are concerned about someone working on a vulnerable neighbour’s home, don’t hesitate to report them to Citizen’s Advice Consumer Service. They work closely with our Trading Standards Teams, who advise residents to never agree to having work done when you’re cold-called.
“If a job needs doing, best practice is to get at least three quotes from different tradespeople, take your time to make an informed decision, and always use a reputable company that people you know and trust have recommended.”
The free Nominated Neighbour scheme is also available in the area to help protect vulnerable residents. It allows a trusted neighbour to speak to callers on their behalf.
Cllr Monica Stringfellow, Redditch Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services and Safeguarding Responsibilities, said: “We urge everyone to look out for vulnerable neighbours. The Nominated Neighbour scheme is a simple way to help keep people safe and prevent scams at the doorstep.”
