Running Out of Excuses
Residents are being urged to lace up their trainers and take part in the latest series of free Couch to 5K sessions taking place across the borough.
The nine-week programme is designed specifically for complete beginners. Whether you're new to running or looking to become more active again, Couch to 5K provides a supportive and achievable way to improve your fitness and wellbeing.
Anyone keen to swap the sofa for a more active lifestyle is welcome to attend. There is no need to book, and all sessions are completely free. The latest programme starts on Sunday 13 September and sessions take place at:
- Sundays - 9:30am - Abbey Track (meet by the track)
- Mondays - 7:30pm - Abbey Track (meet by the track)
- Wednesdays - 7:30pm - Abbey Track (meet inside the centre)
- Fridays - 9:30am - Woodrow Centre (meet outside The Hub)
- Saturdays - 9:30am - Redditch Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Squash Club, Bromsgrove Road, B97 4SP
Leader of Redditch Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Cllr Matt Dormer, said: ““Couch to 5K continues to inspire people of all abilities to become more active and improve their health. The programme offers a welcoming and supportive environment for beginners, and we're delighted to continue providing these sessions free of charge for local residents.”
The weekly sessions are led by qualified Run Leaders accredited through England Athletics and follow a programme endorsed by the NHS.
Participants can choose whichever session suits them each week or attend the same session regularly. Sessions last approximately 45 minutes, and runners are encouraged to take part three times each week to build confidence, improve fitness and work towards completing a 5K run.
The programme is open to anyone aged 12 and over. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout each session.
Many people who complete the programme go on to join local running clubs and community groups, including Parkrun events. Over the years, Couch to 5K has also helped develop a number of local Run Leaders who now support others on their own running journeys.
A special thank you goes to our partner clubs and organisations, including STARS Redditch, Redditch Community Runners and Kingfisher Harriers, for their continued support of the programme.
