Residents transform their mobility with Escape Pain sessions

Residents living with arthritic knee, hip or back pain are being encouraged to sign up for the latest Escape Pain programme which begins on 22 April 2026 at the Abbey Stadium.

The free six week programme supports people with long term pain by combining education, self management, coping strategies and individually tailored exercises. The course runs twice per week at the Abbey Stadium and is designed to help participants understand the condition and how to cope with the pain better. To get the best from the programme, attendees will be expected to attend both sessions each week, Wednesdays and Fridays 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Previous courses have proven extremely popular and spaces are limited so residents are encouraged to register their interest early via the council website: www.redditchbc.gov.uk/escapepain

Outcomes from the most recent course showed very positive results from participants including a 73% reduction in pain during the day, a 95% increase in social activities, a 36% reduction in the need for help from others, a 52% increase in confidence and a 50% reduction in fatigue.

Participants consistently report that the programme makes a real difference to their daily life.

One recent attendee said: “I would also like to praise Martin and Tracy for the excellent course. They are very helpful and knowledgeable. It has helped me so much with my hip pain and I have even joined Martin’s Senior Circuits class too.”

Another participant added: “It has really made a positive difference to my mental health in particular, and I feel more confident and encouraged to continue with regular group activities to improve my health. I have had chronic pain for over five years and only now do I feel I could return to yoga classes. Escape Pain has kickstarted a new improved and healthier me.”

A third said: “Tracy and Martin are very friendly and approachable and have given me the confidence to get fit again.”

Hayley Gwilliam, Sports Development Officer, said: “We always see outstanding results from the Escape Pain courses and the feedback we receive from residents speaks for itself. People tell us they feel more confident, less isolated and able to manage their pain much more effectively. This programme can be genuinely life changing and we would encourage anyone struggling with arthritic pain to join the next course.”
