Residents feeling inspired to get fitter after a summer filled with lots of major sporting events are being encouraged to take up community exercise classes by the councils Sports Development Team.

From the fantastic achievement of our Lionesses in the Euro 2022, the exhilaration of Wimbledon and of course the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, it’s already been an exciting summer of major events which can often leave viewers wanting to improve their own activity levels, get fitter and be healthier.

As a result, the council’s Sports Development Team are encouraging more people to take up Community Exercise Classes to take their first steps towards getting their fitness back on track. With a range of classes, most suited to residents available during the daytime, the team offer activities such as active seniors, walks for health, Strong and Steady, Joint Effort, Zumba Gold, Rounders, Walking Football, ladies only 50+ sessions and others designed to help aid weight loss.

Over the coming weeks, the team will be actively promoting their sessions letting people know exactly what classes they could join in with each day of the week to suit them.

On top of that, the team are so keen to get more people active that they have arranged funding so that all community exercise classes will be absolutely free for the first two weeks of September.

Hayley Gwilliam, Physical Activity Development Officer, said: “If you’ve been inspired by a summer of sport and want to start getting fitter and more active, our community classes could be ideal for you. For some people it can be difficult or daunting to join a privately run class which cater to the masses. Our sessions are specifically designed to be accessible and fun for all and cover a wide variety of activities. So come along and start your journey today.”
