Redditch Crematorium has new and improved pedestrian access after a substantial upgrade.

A changed layout of new paths with shallower gradients now leads up to the funeral venue, after Redditch Borough Council invested £12,000 in better access there.

Cllr Brandon Clayton, Redditch Borough Council’s portfolio holder for Environmental Services, said: “We’re delighted to improve access to Redditch Crematorium. It particularly improves the step free access for people who may have difficulty walking, or who use a wheelchair.”

New on-site signage is also being added, to help visitors find their way around.

The upgrades come after long periods of strict limits on how many people could attend funerals, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the Government’s ‘roadmap’ easing of restrictions, up to 55 people can currently attend funerals inside the crematorium itself, with no limit to how many people can attend outside where speakers can play audio from the service.

Cllr Clayton added: “With the current changes that mean more people are now permitted to go to funerals, it’s a good time to make these upgrades, which hadn’t really been possible under Covid pandemic restrictions.”
