A boat club has set sail once again in Redditch after top talks between the budding sailors, Redditch Borough Council and Rubicon Leisure.

At the weekend Worcester Model Boat Club returned to Arrow Valley Lake for the first time in ten years.

Negotiations overs timings and prices were successful and the waters were afloat with colourful miniature vessels once again.

The Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Cllr Mike Rouse, said: “I am delighted the model boat club has agreed to drop anchor again in Redditch waters.

“Along with the Leader, we started up talks between the then newly formed Rubicon Leisure and Worcester Model Boat Club and the results were evident at the weekend.”

The model boat club’s return was officially opened by Redditch Mayor, Cllr Roger Bennet and the Leader of the Council, Matt Dormer.

Cllr Dormer said: “It was an honour to be at the launch of the model boat club, at Arrow Valley this weekend.

“We are committed to unlocking Redditch – and this includes its stretches of water too!”

Rubicon Leisure is a Local Authority Trading Company which is owned by the council but acts like a private company in certain ways. It runs Arrow Valley Visitor Centre, including the café there, in partnership with the Council.

A spokesperson said; “We are delighted to welcome Worcestershire Model Boat Club to the Visitor Centre and glad that we could support the club in returning to the lake. We hope this is the first of many community clubs and organisations to take advantage of the facilities on offer at the Visitor Centre.”

Worcester Model Boat Club will sail at the lake every Sundays and on Tuesday afternoons / evenings.

Club Chairman Alex Willis said: “Worcester Model Boat Club was received warmly by the people of Redditch who came along to witness the spectacle of model boats at stunning venue of Arrow Valley Park.

“I was honoured that the Mayor took time out to officially welcome us to Arrow Valley and, like lots of visitors to the park that day, genuinely took a keen interest in everything we are about.

“Worcester Model Boat Club was founded on the ethos of a model boat club for everyone regardless of budget or ability, everyone welcomed and encouraged, this has proven to be a huge success.  We pride ourselves on being one big family with a focus on having fun and enjoying the hobby.”
