Residents and visitors are invited to explore their local history as this year’s programme of FREE Heritage Open Days events is launched.

The annual celebration of history, culture and community will once again see heritage buildings, community organisations, and local attractions opening their doors for a packed programme of free events, tours, exhibitions, talks, and activities.

Everyone is invited to attend as many events as they can across the 10-day festival, enter three or more and you can enter the Heritage Hunters competition for the opportunity to win prizes.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Matt Dormer, said: "Our heritage tells the story of who we are and how our communities have developed over the years. Heritage Open Days brings those stories to life and offers something for all ages. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply looking for a great free day out, there's plenty to discover in this year's programme."

Whether you're keen to uncover hidden history, visit fascinating buildings not usually open to the public, or learn more about the people and places that have shaped the borough, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

To help people plan their visit, printed Heritage Open Days 2026 booklets are now available to collect free of charge from locations across the borough, including:

• Local libraries
• Council Customer Services at 5 George Walk, Kingfisher Shopping Centre (behind Primark)
• Local supermarkets
• Selected community venues

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, offering thousands of free experiences across the country and providing unique opportunities for people to connect with their local heritage.
