Giving St Stephen’s a New Glow
One of Redditch Town Centre’s most recognisable landmarks is shining bright after dark thanks to a new architectural lighting scheme.
Earlier this month St. Stephens Church, on Church Green, had uplighting installed to showcase the church’s distinctive architecture and create a striking focal point at the heart of the town centre during the evening and early morning hours.
Leader of Redditch Borough Council, Cllr. Matt Dormer, said: “The church is one of the town centre’s most recognisable buildings, these new lights mean that it can be appreciated both day and night. Not only does this project support the towns heritage, but it is another positive step forward in our goal to enhance the experiences of everyone who visits our town.”
Funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and delivered by Redditch Borough Council in partnership with Redditch BID, the scheme was developed in response to feedback from town centre businesses, who wanted to see improved lighting around Church Green. The project uses carefully positioned, energy efficient lighting to highlight key architectural features of St. Stephen’s whilst minimising unnecessary light spill.
Manager of Redditch BID, Muj Rahmam, said: “We’re delighted to have worked alongside Redditch Borough Council to bring this project to life. St Stephen’s Church is one of Redditch’s most iconic landmarks, and illuminating it will not only showcase its beautiful architecture but also create a more attractive and welcoming town centre after dark.
“This investment will also benefit local businesses by encouraging more visitors to explore the shops, restaurants, and cafés around Church Green, increasing footfall and supporting the evening economy.
“The ability to change the lighting colours for special occasions and community events adds another exciting dimension, bringing people together and creating a greater sense of pride in our town.
“This is a fantastic example of how listening to businesses and working in partnership can deliver positive improvements for the whole community.”
As well as enhancing the appearance of Church Green and the wider town centre, the lighting can be adjusted to different colours – allowing the church to support community events, awareness campaigns, and seasonal celebrations throughout the year.
Vicar of St. Stephen’s Church, Fraser Oates, said: “We are delighted with the result. “The lighting highlights the church’s beauty and brings some joy to our town centre. St Stephen’s remains at the heart of our community, and this thoughtful addition helps to celebrate Redditch’s rich history.”
The project forms part of ongoing investment in Redditch Town Centre and reflects priorities identified by local businesses through the BID.
It also helps to create a more welcoming environment, support positive perceptions of safety, and contribute to ongoing efforts to discourage anti-social behaviour around Church Green, benefiting residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
The lighting will operate daily between 6am and 9.15am and from 3.30pm until midnight, with photocell technology ensuring the lights only turn on during hours of sufficient darkness.
