Redditch people are invited to get reflective and be creative this New Year.

Residents and visitors to the town are being asked to get imaginative about what the borough means to them by contributing to ‘The Redditch Borough Poem’.

Each contributor will be sent the poem up to that point, add their line and send it back to council officers to collate.
The poem will be open for additions until the end of February 2020.

The finished poem will then be performed at a launch event on 20th March.

The official title of the poem is yet to be decided and will depend on the responses from residents. Current favourites include ‘The Redditch Borough Poem’ or ‘100 Ways of Looking at Redditch’.

Cllr Mike Rouse, whose portfolio covers Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “I will definitely be submitting a line with input from my daughters. Poetry is not only fun, it is reflective, artistic, creative, collaborative and anyone can get involved; no matter their age or background. Your submission can be short or long, it can respond to other lines, it can be abstract – the possibilities are endless. We look forward to reading your contributions!”

Poetry can accommodate diverse viewpoints – and the council welcome different perspectives on Redditch. The one proviso is that we are unable to accept submissions which are hateful or contain expletives, as we want this poem to provide an inclusive reflection of our town which will be suitable for all.

If you would like to get involved in writing this poem, or would like more information or help, please contact Redditch Borough Council Arts Development Officer Stewart Sanderson via email or over the phone: 01527 534 072.
