Private hire operator licences
If you want to accept bookings for any number of private hire vehicles you will need to be licensed by us.
These licences are valid for up to one year and are issued subject to conditions. Licences may be taken away if conditions are not met.
- Applicants must be over 21 years of age
- Applicants must have conversational English
- Applicants should be free from previous convictions and cautions, other than minor traffic offences.
We have a right to refuse an application if we consider that applicants are not “fit and proper” persons.
Application Evaluation Process
You will need to complete and return an application form to us with the following documents:
- A CRB disclosure application and fee
- The application fee. Here are our fees and charges.
Will Tacit Consent Apply?
No. It is in the public interest that the council must process the application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from us within a reasonable period, please contact us
Failed Application Redress
If you do not meet the above eligibility criteria, the decision to grant or renew your application may have to be made at a meeting of our Licensing Committee. You can attend this meeting to make your case. You can also be accompanied by a representative who does not need to be legally qualified.
If your application is refused, you can appeal to the Magistrates Court within 21 days from being informed of the decision of the Committee.
We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made by the customer with the driver.
You can also discuss the complaint with us.
