Environmental permits

Certain industrial processes have the capacity to pollute our environment. As a result they are regulated via a system of environmental permits which minimise pollution from the installation through conditions. If you operate a regulated activity you must have an environmental permit.

Some regulated activities

If you are in any doubt as to whether you need a permit, contact us.

  • Energy – petrol, burning fuel, gasification and refining activities
  • Metals - manufacturing and processing metals
  • Minerals – clay, lime, cement, ceramics, glass, asbestos
  • Chemicals – coatings, manufacturing chemicals, pharmaceuticals or explosives, storing chemicals in bulk
  • Waste - incinerating waste, operating landfills, recovering waste
  • Solvents - Di-isocyanate, Dry Cleaners
  • Animal and plant – treatments, Maggot breeding, intensive pig and poultry farming
  • Other – rubber, manufacturing paper, pulp and board, treating timber products, coating, treating textiles and printing, manufacturing new tyres.

How do permits control pollution?

We attach conditions to the permit to minimise pollution. This may include:

  • Pollution control equipment to remove or reduce pollution to the environment
  • Routine monitoring by the permit holder
  • Regular visits and inspections
  • Other measures to reduce harmful emissions.

Apply for a permit

Depending on the potential of your installation to pollute, permits are available either from us or from the Environment Agency. Choose one of the following:

  1. My activity causes emissions to air
  2. My activity has a range of environmental impacts.

The regulation can be complicated, so if you are unsure in any way please ask.
